German Romantic Lieder

During the 19th century, Café Grünsteidl in Vienna served as a meeting point for musicians and poets. One day the young Hugo Wolf performed some of his lieder there on request, and they were very well recieved. He was asked why he hadn´t shown his work to the great lied master Brahms. To this question he answered: " I sent him one of my songs five years ago, and asked him to have a look at it and to put a cross in the score where he would find something that he didn´t like.

Brahms sent it back to me unread with the comment that he would rather not make my composition into a cemetery."

Despite their different views on musical ideals, both Wolf and Brahms is well represented in this program, which also includes the works of other important lied masters like Robert Schumann, Richard Strauss and Alma Mahler.
